Clinical advancement program

At Children's Memorial, we help nurses function to the best of their abilities and we reward them accordingly.

Our clinical ladder promotion system recognizes and compensates registered nurses for their expertise in clinical practice. Nurses are eligible for promotions based on their ability to demonstrate a certain level of professional expertise in clinical decision-making, education of families and colleagues, nursing research and leadership skills. Nurses may progress through four levels on the clinical ladder. With each level, the nurse receives a promotional increase in salary and title change. Our titles reflect commitment to family-centered care. The three job titles of nurses are:

  • Registered Nurse
  • Registered Nurse - Advanced
  • Registered Nurse - Expert

Nurse exemplar program

The nurse exemplar program recognizes and rewards extraordinary nurses who demonstrate a special way of advocating for families, caring for children and teaching their colleagues. Each year, staff members nominate their peers to become recipients of eight different nurse exemplar awards:

  • Family advocate
  • Nurse consultant
  • Nurse preceptor
  • Nurse researcher
  • Family educator
  • Expert clinical nurse leader
  • Expert nurse collaborator

Previous award recipients select the winners, and the awards are presented at a hospital ceremony. Each winner receives an engraved gift and a stipend that can be used to pursue professional endeavors. This program highlights the art of nursing and recognizes the importance of nursing in the delivery of top-notch patient care.

Healthcare Advisory Board "Destination Nursing" hospital designation

With over 3,000 member hospitals, the Healthcare Advisory Board researches best practices in the healthcare industry and highlights them at national meetings. Children's Memorial has been chosen as one of five “Destination Nursing” hospitals and will be profiled in a series of nation-wide meetings of the Nursing Executive Center, the nursing arm of the Healthcare Advisory Board.

As a “Destination Nursing” hospital, Children's Memorial has been successful in creating a great work environment for nurses. At Children's Memorial, nursing staff satisfaction is higher and turnover and vacancy rates are lower than national averages.
