The first pediatric hospital in the region to perform single incision laparoscopic surgery
Children's Memorial's team of pediatric surgeons is now performing single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) for a number of different procedures including, but not limited to appendectomy, cholecystectomy and intussusception. SILS is a technique by which all the laparoscopic instruments are placed through the same incision at the umbilicus. The incision, which is buried within the folds of the umbilicus, is essentially lost deep down in the umbilicus and leaves no obvious scarring after one month of healing. Watch a video on minimally invasive surgery and the SILS procedure, or read more about the minimally invasive surgery program at Children's Memorial.

Leading the way in food allergy research
Today, approximately 4.3 million children suffer from a potentially life-threatening type of food allergy. With this in mind, Dr. Xioban Wang, MD and Jacqueline Pongracic, MD are leading a team to investigate the variation in the prevalence and types of food allergy across diverse populations and geographic regions with different environmental exposures and lifestyles. The study in Chicago alone has enrolled more than 700 families to date. Learn more about who can qualify for this study. As a result of its concerted efforts, the food allergy study team at Children's Memorial has emerged as a leading group in food allergy reasearch in the U.S. It is one of 12 teams recently funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to conduct high impact and innovative research on food allergy. The goal is to predict who is likely to develop food allergies, who might outgrow food allergy and which therapies might lessen the severity of reactions or protect against them. Read more »
