Children’s Memorial Hospital’s future home, the 23-story Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, celebrated its “Topping Off” at a special event on December 7, 2009. The celebration was held at the Museum of Contemporary of Art Plaza, located across the street from Lurie Children’s in downtown Chicago. Hundreds of people attended the festive event, including hospital staff, donors, elected officials, patient families and construction workers. Speakers included philanthropist Ann Lurie, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and first lady Maggie Daley, and leaders from Children’s Memorial and Northwestern University. The “Topping Off” celebration also paid tribute to the more than 1,300 construction workers involved in the project. The event featured a dramatic light show, and concluded with the raising of the highest steel beam 400 feet to the top of the structure. Lurie Children’s will open in 2012.
