Teacher visits student at Children’s Memorial Hospital for first time following kidney transplant

Fourth grade school teacher, Patsy Donahue, 25, sees student, Brandon Shafer, 10, for the first time Tuesday, May 2, following the donation of her kidney transplanted at Children's Memorial Hospital.

Brandon suffers from polycystic kidney disease, a genetic disease. Donahue, who proved to be a suitable match, said she donated her kidney to Brandon because her father suffered from leukemia and owes his life to a bone marrow transplant. More than 90,000 in this country are waiting for an organ.

Brandon's physician team at Children's is led by Dr. Richard Cohn, Medical Director, Kidney Transplantation and Dr. Riccardo Superina, Director, Transplantation Surgery.
