Children's Memorial named one of the nation's best in Child Magazine

January 2007 — Children's Memorial Hospital has been named one of the top 20 children's hospitals in the country according to Child magazine's 2007 comprehensive survey of top pediatric hospitals. Children's Memorial ranked number 18 out of seventy-six children's hospitals surveyed, and number 10 in the pediatric subspecialty, Pulmonary. No other children's hospital in Illinois made the list.

Children's Memorial Hospital's Web site wins three Greystone awards and two 2006 eHealthcare Leadership awards

November 2006 —The hospital's Web site received five awards that were announced at the 2006 Tenth Annual Healthcare Internet Conference held in Atlanta in November.

The three Greystone awards are a “gold” 2006 Greystone.Net Best In Class Award for Best Web Site Interactivity; a “silver” award for Most Innovative Use of Technology for a Web Site; and another “silver” for Most Innovative Web Site .

Children's Memorial's two awards from Health Care Communications are a “gold” award in eHealthcare Leadership for Best Staff Recruitment among hospitals in the 200-399 bed range and a “distinction” for Best e-Business in the same bed range. More here about the awards.

Children's Memorial Named to “100 Best Companies for Working Mothers”

September 2006 —For the second consecutive year Working Mother magazine has named Children's Memorial Hospital as one of the nation's “100 Best Companies for Working Mothers” in its annual roundup of family friendly companies. Children's Memorial is one of nine companies in Illinois to make the list.

Companies answer a questionnaire covering more than 500 items and are selected based on items such as flexibility, exemplary company culture, family friendly programs and number of women in management positions. In its profile of Children's Memorial, the magazine highlighted the hospital's flexible scheduling, new parent programs, adoption benefits and child care assistance.

Children's Memorial accredited by the American College of Radiology

March 2006 — The American College of Radiology accredited Children's Memorial in MRI and granted re-accreditation in ultrasound for all sites. Accreditation is achieved through a strenuous application process which is reviewed by a panel of radiologists (blinded) for quality assurance and controls. Few sites receive this honor. Children's Memorial again re-designated with Magnet status

November 2005 — Children's Memorial was reconfirmed as having received this award again for nursing excellence. Less than 3 percent of U.S. hospitals have achieved and/or maintained this distinction.

Children's Memorial became the nation's first pediatric hospital to receive the coveted Magnet Award from the American Nurses Credentialing Center in December, 2001. Magnet status recognizes the high ratio of registered nurses in the clinical mix, a nurse executive at board level, available education courses, professional autonomy and a strong clinical career ladder. Children's Memorial designated a Pediatric Critical Care Center

August 2005 — The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the Illinois Emergency Medical Services for Children awarded a certificate of recognition to Children's Memorial, which was designated as a Pediatric Critical Care Center for its high level of specialized critical care to pediatric patients. There are currently five PCCC hospitals providing care to Illinois children. More about our Division of Critical Care here.

Children's Memorial included in Chicago magazine's 25 Best Places to Work list

October 2004 — Children's Memorial Hospital has been named as one of the metropolitan area's best employers by Chicago magazine in its 25 Best Places to Work issue. Children's Memorial ranks 9th out of more than 350 companies that applied. Chicago magazine, the largest city monthly magazine in the U.S., in its October 2004 issue honors 25 companies from a wide geographical area and a variety of industries that excelled in all of the following areas: benefits and compensation practices, time off, personnel policies, turnover data, and an opinion survey of a random sample of employees. “Our placement on the list is clear proof that we are making real progress toward our goal of being one of the best places to work in the country,” said Patrick M. Magoon, president and CEO, Children's Memorial Hospital. “While benefits programs and human resource policies contribute to making an organization an employer of choice, our staff's commitment to our patients and our mission truly makes Children's Memorial special.”

Children's Memorial receives InfoWorld 100 award

January 2004 — Children's Memorial has been recognized as one of the 2003 InfoWorld 100 thanks to its use of SPSS Inc.'s (NASDAQ:SPSS) data mining and text mining solutions. The InfoWorld 100 is an annual award that honors organizations that have demonstrated the most creative use of cutting-edge technologies to further the achievement of their business goals.

According to Eric Bremer, PhD, director of the brain tumor research program at Children's Memorial Hospital and associate professor at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, "Leveraging SPSS' data and text mining tools is helping us to realize one of our main goals, the development of a gene expression 'knowledge base' for pediatric brain tumors. Ultimately, we hope that this will result in more effective treatments by enabling us to predict how a patient may respond to a therapy."

November 2002 — The Chicago/Cook County Community Health Council recognized Children's Memorial as an exemplary community partner with long-standing leadership and commitment to improving the health status of Chicago and Cook County residents.

Health magazine recognizes Children's Memorial Hospital

July 2002 — Our hospital is named a great place to work, especially for women Health magazine's July/August issue named Children's Memorial Hospital among the best companies to work for, especially for women. The hospital was named as a runner-up to 10 elite firms that go above and beyond for employees, providing excellent health insurance, adoption assistance, and helping to balance life and work. One of the benefits cited was the hospital's employee health program that includes Pilates, Tai Chi, yoga, health seminars and weight loss programs.

Children's Memorial recognized for child abuse prevention

March 2002 — The Child Maltreatment Awareness Project, headed by Susan Fuchs, MD, of the Department of Emergency Medicine, and Emergency Medical Services Coordinator Peter Lazzara, was honored with a Program Excellence Award by Prevent Child Abuse Illinois in a March ceremony at the state capitol rotunda in Springfield. The project educates "pre-hospital providers" such as emergency medical technicians and firemen about how to recognize child maltreatment and was launched with support from the Office of Child Advocacy. By raising awareness the project aims to reduce injury and mortality from abuse and neglect.

Last year, nearly 1,700 pre-hospital providers benefited from this project. Children's Memorial is now collaborating with the Chicago Department of Public Health's "Safe Start" initiative to conduct training with the Chicago Police Department and early childhood providers. Child abuse and neglect is the second leading cause of child injury and death in the nation for children ages one to four.

The hospital's PALS training center is named the best
in the nation for 2001 - 2002

January 2002 — On behalf of the hospital's Pediatric Advanced Life Support training center, Harriet Hawkins, RN, received an award in January 2002 from the American Heart Association for being the year's top PALS training center in the nation.

national Magnet award

December 2001 — Children's Memorial Hospital, Department of Nursing, was awarded the designation as the first ANCC Magnet Hospital in Illinois and the first freestanding children's hospital in the nation to receive the Magnet Award for Nursing Excellence. More here.

August 2001 — Named as a 2001 Well Workplace Winner, Children's Memorial Hospital is recognized as one of "America's Healthiest Companies." The "Gold" award recently announced by the Worksite Wellness Council of Illinois demonstrates senior management's commitment to wellness, team efforts to plan and develop a program, operations support and employee response through program participation.
