Position Summary: The scope of the Nurse Epidemiologist is interdepartmental and multidisciplinary for all acute and ambulatory care settings and related services of the organization. This professional, under the supervision of the Corporate manger, acts as a consultant, educator, and facilitator in the coordination of surveillance, prevention and control efforts to ensure the right of patients, healthcare workers and visitors to a healthful environment. This professional collects and verifies data specific to patient outcomes of infection and environmental hazard relative to potential infection prevention and transmission. This professional coordinates and communicates infection prevention and control practices clearly and completely throughout the organization and helps the organization to fulfill its legal responsibility to safeguard public health

Essential Job Functions:

  • Coordinates and performs patient outcome, and if applicable, patient care process surveillance for nosocomial infections as evidenced and directed by the Infection Surveillance, Prevention & Control Annual Plan.
  • Facilitates and performs surveillance of the environment of care for risk reduction related to potential sources of infection in the healthcare setting.
  • Organizes and performs the reporting of communicable diseases as required by the state and federal government to the local and state health authorities.
  • Provides educational offerings relative to surveillance, prevention & control of infection to staff, care providers and other key customers.
  • Collaborates and works with Occupational Health Services to prevent and control communicable disease transmission related to occupational settings.

FTE status: FT-72

Requirements

  • Current RN license to practice professional nursing in the State of Illinois. Certification in Infection Control (CIC) adn BSN preferred; membership in the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) preferred.
  • A minimum of three years experience in patient care or a related medical field; infection prevention & control experience preferred.
  • Basic knowledge and skills in the following areas: Patient care practices, Infectious diseases, Microbiology, Epidemiology & statistics, Principles & practices of asepsis, Employee health management & communication and Regulatory agencies.

Full-Time, .9 FTE  (72 hours/pp)

Hours:  Days, 8a-4:30p  Position may require flexible start and end times based on department need.
