Pulmonary Function Technician

This position sets up, calibrates, performs lung function studies, performs exercise studies in conjunction with the exercise physiology laboratory, calculates and prepares patient reports.

Essential Job Functions:

1. Performs pulmonary function studies, transcutaneous blood gas monitoring, pulse oximetry, bronchodilator studies, infant pulmonary tests, impulse oscillometry, bronchoprovocation challenges on patients, which includes administering drugs under medical supervision. Performs exercise studies as needed in conjunction with the exercise physiology lab. Assists physician with bronchoscopies.

2. Sets up, cleans up, and calibrates equipment for studies, and troubleshoots when necessary. Prepares patient for tests which includes obtaining written consent, explaining test procedures, ensuring patient safety, obtaining height and weight, and properly placing equipment on patient. Calculates and prepares test reports.

3. Develops and maintains policy and procedure manuals, quality control programs, and safety procedures for the lab that meet the approval of the Medical Director and JCAHO.

4. Establishes and maintains preventive maintenance programs for all laboratory equipment. In conjunction with the Medical Director and Director of Cardio-Pulmonary, evaluates potential new equipment and supplies.

5. Ensures that all tests performed are charged as per hospital and lab procedures. Tracks volumes and prepares reports as requested.

6. Monitors the laboratory for quality management and preparing quarterly reports to the Quality Management Committee.

7. Prepares and processes purchase orders/repairs after obtaining appropriate signature.

8. Provides training to technical staff, medical students and residents.

9. Attends regular scheduled educational programs in pulmonary function and respiratory physiology. Attends in-services for infection control, fire safety, and for new equipment.

10. Assists with research and clinical projects as directed by Medical Director.

11. Coordinates all scheduling for the PFT laboratory assuring patients are in Cadence with supporting documentation for billing.

12. May be required to perform phlebotomy. Additional appropriate projects at the discretion of the Medical Director of the Pulmonary Function Lab and the Director of the Cardio-Pulmonary Labs.

13. Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others

Requirements

1. Graduate of AMA-approved registry program in Respiratory Therapy or an equivalent degree in Exercise Physiology, Nursing, or other allied health related experience.

2. Should be CPR certified within first year on job and PALS certified within two years. Successful completion of on-the-job training program within 6 months. Certification per laboratory standards for bronchoscopy assistance and pulmonary function testing achieved within 6 months.

3. Ability to stand 75% of the work day.

4. Ability to move machinery and lift patients weighing 20-40 pounds. Ability to communicate effectively with hospital/departmental staff and patients/parents. Daily telephone contact with physicians and other staff. Familiarity with a keyboard and some computer knowledge necessary. Certification in Pulmonary Function Technology a plus.
