Student information

High school students volunteer in the outpatient areas of the hospital. These areas operate during weekday hours and for that reason, most students' schedules only allow them to volunteer during the summer when they are not in school. Learn more here about the summer volunteer program.

College students volunteer in a wider range of assignments throughout the medical center. Most students volunteer in the daytime during weekday hours between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm. The minimum time requirement for the daytime program is one-half day per week for six months or longer. Evening and weekend opportunities also exist, but because they require a one-year commitment and can include several months of waiting to begin, they are generally not a good match for college students.

To begin volunteering, make sure you have the following:

  • Your schedule for the current or upcoming semester, including classes, labs, work and other activities.
  • Your preferred days and times (You should be able to commit at least one-half day during weekday hours every week.)
  • The ability to volunteer for at least six months.
  • If you know your schedule for the current or upcoming semester and you have at least one-half day during daytime hours available to volunteer, call Volunteer Resources at 773.880.4507 to arrange for an interview. A six-month commitment is required.
  • If you can't volunteer during the school year because you are not available during the required hours, you may want to volunteer during the summer volunteer program at Children's Memorial.
