The Maeve McNicholas Memorial Foundation
The Maeve McNicholas
Memorial Foundation recently became an Affiliated Organization of Children's Memorial Hospital. Maeve’s parents, along with family
and friends, established the Foundation in 2005. Maeve died on July 29, 2004, as
a result of a brain tumor that was diagnosed less than 36 hours before. She was
only 26 months old.
The mission of Maeve’s
Foundation is to assist/fund programs and hospitals
to:
- Increase public awareness about the
severity and prevalence of childhood brain tumors
- Aid in early detection of childhood
brain tumors by increasing awareness of symptoms
- Help to find the cause and a cure
for childhood brain tumors through the support of medical
research
- Help support families with children
living with brain tumors
Maeve’s Foundation has
donated over $170,000 to Children's Memorial Hospital in just two years. In 2006,
Fabricio Costa, PhD, became the first Maeve Foundation Scholar in Cancer Biology
and Epigenomics. His research focuses on uncovering the molecular signatures of
pediatric brain tumors to predict how they will respond to
treatment.
The foundation’s
signature event is Play for Maeve, a day of family fun each summer. The event
takes place in Beverly Park on the south side of the city. For more information,
