Research
One of the missions of our program is to advance the field of pediatric transplantation through research. To achieve this mission, our program is a member of the Siragusa Transplant Center , Northwestern University Affiliated Transplant Programs (NUATC), The Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center at Northwestern University, The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), The Children's Oncology Group (COG) and the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Consortium (PBMTC).
Each of these entities sponsor clinical trials in pediatric transplantation that facilitates providing advanced therapies for our patients.
Countdown to Day Zero: steps in a stem cell transplant. The day a stem cell transplant is performed is universally known as Day Zero; minus numbers are assigned to the days leading up to and preparing for the transplant procedure.
After a transplant is performed, the count forward begins with many milestones of recovery occuring within the first 100 days. From beginning to end, a stem cell transplant is a journey.
Some of the clinical trials available include:
- Tandem stem cell transplants for children and adolescents with recurrent brain tumors who are chemotherapy sensitive.
- A study to assess coagulation and thrombotic phenomena in children undergoing stem cell transplantation. (A multi-institutional trial sponsored by the American Cancer Society.)
- A study to assess post-traumatic stress syndrome in caregivers of children undergoing stem cell transplantation. (A multi-institutional trial sponsor by the National Institutes of Health.)
- Immune-ablative transplantation for malignant and non-malignant disease on Institutional Pilot.
* All protocols are IRB approved.
