Research
Children’s is a major contributor to the North American Pediatric Renal Transplant Cooperative Study (NAPRTCS), a cohort of 130 centers from the United States, Canada, and Mexico that maintains the largest transplant database for children. NAPRTCS is completing its first multi-center trial of transplant induction medications, in which Children’s is an integral part, and is starting a second study involving a medication to help prevent chronic rejection.
The major clinical focus of the kidney transplant program is the development of a research program in transplant immunobiology to assist in fine-tuning immunosuppression. This would allow physicians to prescribe doses of immunosuppressive medications tailored to the specific needs of each child rather than use a standard regimen for patients.
