Speech, language and swallowing
Speech-language pathologists are professionals experienced in the evaluation
and treatment of communication and swallowing disorders. At Children's Memorial
Hospital, they work with children (newborn through teen) in both inpatient and
outpatient settings.
The speech-language pathologist provides direct and consultative services in
the following areas:
- Production and use of speech sounds
o Articulation
o Phonology
o
Apraxia
- Language difficulties
o Expressive language: ability to answer
questions, formulate sentences, convey ideas to others and to use of social
language
o Receptive language: ability to understand spoken and written
language, follow directions and answer questions
- Stuttering/fluency
- Cleft palate, cleft lip and/or craniofacial anomalies
- Nasality, resonance, and voice issues
- Neurological trauma (e.g. brain injury)
- Aural rehabilitation – the development of listening and speaking skills
for children with hearing loss
