Physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist

Shubhra Mukherjee, MD, is a double board-certified specialist in pediatric rehabilitation, and in physical medicine and rehabilitation. She sees children with physical disabilities, such as cerebral palsy , spina bifida , spinal cord injury, gait or walking disorders, brachial plexus nerve injury, stroke and other neuromuscular conditions. Her interests are in working with children and teens with disabilities as they transition to adulthood.

She assesses children with disabilities to assist in planning their rehabilitative needs with regard to therapy, equipment, and mobility needs, as well as medical therapy. Monitoring children with disabilities during their growing years is important to help achieve their potential in development of the bones, joints and muscles, as well as their skills and abilities. Issues such as muscle strengthening and fitness, bowel and bladder care, spasticity management, swallowing issues, osteoporosis, joint deformity, skin care and pressure sores are also addressed.

Spasticity management is goal-oriented, and may include physical therapy, orthotic management, splinting, casting, oral medications, temporary nerve block injections with botulinum toxin, and positioning equipment.

Transition to adulthood is a life-long process that involves gradually increasing experiences and independence in self care, mobility, social skills, and decision making. Guiding parents and care givers with a long-term planning approach is Dr. Mukherjee's special focus.
