Being a place where "kids come first" is a top priority for the Department of
Medical Imaging (formerly Radiology) at Children's Memorial Hospital. Kids are
not simply smaller versions of adults; they react differently to medications, to
diagnostic tests, to surgery—to virtually everything.
Therefore, they require the skilled attention of health professionals trained
especially in the care of children. That's why we believe that Children's
Memorial is one of the best places around for children and their families.
The hospital's 22 radiologists have special qualifications in
pediatric radiology, and the 30 pediatric nurses are all PALS-certified (Pediatric
Advanced Life Support). Each one is highly skilled in venipuncture, bladder
catheterization and patient sedation. The experienced staff handles about 79,000
imaging procedures each year.
The Department of Medical Imaging has state-of-the-art imaging equipment,
including newly installed MR and CT scanners, computed radiography and digital
fluoroscopy. For patients that may require sedation, there is a newly designed,
well-equipped private observation and holding suite staffed by medical imaging
nurses.
Children's Memorial is a teaching hospital and therefore
our department also functions as a teaching center for residents and fellows. We
are also the clinical site for many affiliated imaging programs. Our imaging
students come from Wilbur Wright College, Triton College, Moraine Valley
Community College and the College of DuPage, to name a few.
Because of our commitment to family-centered care, we encourage and support
parents' participation in imaging procedures. As a parent, you may be present
during most or all of the procedure, with moms and dads alternating for each
other during that time. We will do everything possible to ensure that your child
has the comfort of knowing you are near.
Medical imaging services are provided on multiple floors of the hospital at
the Lincoln Park campus and also at our outpatient centers in Westchester and in Glenview. For more information or
