About the symposium:

The annual child maltreatment symposium will benefit physicians, social workers, teachers, attorneys, psychologists, nurses, law enforcement, child advocates and others whose profession may involve interaction with child abuse and neglect.

Topics to be discussed:

  • Mechanisms of fractures
  • Abusive head trauma
  • Prosecuting perpetrators of physical child abuse
  • Interviewing caregivers
  • Controversies in physical child abuse diagnoses

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify mechanisms of fractures, fracture types and other factors that help determine if fractures are inflicted by child abuse
  • Identify mechanisms of abusive head trauma, signs and symptoms of abusive head trauma and other factors that help determine if head trauma is inflicted or accidental in nature
  • Describe common defenses and arguments against the diagnosis of abusive head trauma and explain the importance of providing evidence based testimony to prove abuse allegations
