Specialists and subspecialists
Specialists in critical care medicine complete three years of training in
pediatrics after medical school (this is called residency) and three more years
in critical care medicine (called fellowship) before becoming attending
physicians in the intensive care unit.
If a child's condition is very complex and requires the consultation of a
variety of subspecialists, Children's Memorial Hospital is the hospital of
choice. The
PICU at Children's has one of the largest
subspecialty training programs in pediatric critical care medicine in the
country.
Very few pediatric hospitals have Children's Memorial equivalent level of
high-tech surgical services available nor the depth and breadth of highly
qualified subspecialists immediately on hand. Renowned specialists are available
in virtually every pediatric subspecialty known.
