The Division of Pediatric
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery treats plastic and reconstructive problems resulting
from both congenital (existing at birth) and acquired defects.
Expertise is available for cleft lip and palate; deformities of the skull,
jaw and face (craniomaxillofacial); congenital and acquired deformities of the
ear; complex skin and soft tissue defects (with expertise in pediatric tissue
expansion); congenital and acquired deformities of the hand; treatment of blood
vessel abnormalities (hemangiomas and other blood vessel malformations); burn
reconstruction; and microvascular surgery for treatment of both soft tissue and
musculoskeletal defects throughout the body.
Multidisciplinary teams are essential for the treatment of a number of
conditions. For example, the team that treats cleft lip and palate and
craniofacial problems includes pediatric specialists from audiology, dentistry,
developmental/medical psychology, genetics, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, oral
surgery, orthodontics, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, radiology, and speech
and language pathology.
Parent education and counseling is a major emphasis in all
areas.
