The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery has the largest outpatient volume of any specialty at Children's Memorial Hospital. Since the move in 2002 to an outpatient facility just blocks away from the main hospital on Clark Street, the division has been able to accommodate an increasing number of patients; the team currently sees approximately 15,000 children per year.

In collaboration with colleagues in neurosurgery, urology and nursing, the team hosts one of the largest spina bifida centers in the country.

The division state-of-the-art musculoskeletal care for children with:

  • Trauma
  • Congenital anomalies and developmental deformities of the shoulder, arm, forearm, spine (scoliosis, kyphosis and lordosis), pelvis, hip (congenital dislocation, Legg-Perthes disease,) and lower limb and foot (clubfoot.)
  • Hand and upper extremity disorders — A monthly hand program is staffed jointly by orthopaedic surgery and plastic surgery. Children with congenital and acquired hand problems are evaluated in this specialty program.
  • Brachial plexus - A monthly program is staffed by an orthopaedic surgeon, a neurosurgeon and a rehabilitative surgeon, as well as an orthopaedic nurse and occupational therapist. Children with congenital brachial plexus injuries are evaluated in this multi-specialty program.
  • Musculoskeletal oncology - New expertise in orthopaedic oncology and limb salvage surgery is also now available, which sometimes can spare kids from the trauma of full limb amputation.
  • Limb-length inequalities and angular problems
  • Sports injuries - These injuries are treated by a dedicated sports medicine physician whose program includes injury prevention education. More information on this program...
  • Transitioning older patients with life-long congenital issues into adult care when deemed appropriate
