Pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus fellowship
At Children's Memorial Hospital, Northwestern University's Feinberg School of
Medicine, we offer a one-year fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and
strabismus. The program is based at Children's Memorial.
Fellows obtain broad clinical, surgical and research experience in areas of
pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus. This includes but not limited to
pediatric strabismus and amblyopia, pediatric cataracts, pediatric glaucoma,
pediatric plastics and lacrimal surgery, pediatric ocular tumors
(retinoblastoma, etc), retinopathy of prematurity, ophthalmic
genetics/electroretinogram laboratory, neurofibromatosis, retinal manifestations
of retinal infections, pediatric corneal disease and adult strabismus.
Fellows participate in the comprehensive ophthalmologic examination,
evaluation and treatment of patients. The program includes surgical training
involving evaluation, diagnosis and operative procedures for general pediatric
ophthalmology and strabismus.
Surgical training includes but is not limited to pediatric cataract
extraction, primary and secondary intraocular lens implantation, strabismus
surgery, horizontal muscle recession and resection, inferior oblique recession,
inferior oblique advancement, superior oblique tenotomy or spacer, adult
strabismus, complex strabismus reoperation, pediatric oculoplastic eyelid
procedures, nasolacrimal duct probing, balloon dacryoplasty, nasolacrimal duct
silicone intubation, dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR), intralesional steroid
injections, glaucoma procedures and retinoblastoma treatment (laser therapy,
cryotherapy, enucleation).
The full-time staff of the Division of Ophthalmology consists of Dr. Marilyn B. Mets, Dr. Janice Lasky Zeid, Dr. Bahram Rahmani and Dr. Hawke Yoon. All
engage actively in clinical research, teaching, and the practice of general
pediatric ophthalmology. Dr. Mets also has special interest in adult strabismus
and ophthalmic genetics and hereditary retinal disorders; she is the director of
the Retinal Electrophysiology Laboratory for Children's Memorial Hospital and
Northwestern University. The lab is based at Children's Memorial; she sees
patients who undergo electroretinography at Children's Memorial 2 to 3 days each
month.
Dr. Lasky Zeid has special interest in neurofibromatosis and optic nerve
glioma. She is co-director of the Neurofibromatosis Program and sees patients 3
days a month in this multidisciplinary service. Dr. Rahmani has a special
interest in pediatric oculoplastics and takes care of patients with lacrimal,
eyelid and orbital disorders.
