Neurology

Ranked 16th in the nation, the Division of Neurology at Children's Memorial is growing and expanding. More Chicago-area families bring youngsters with neurological problems to Children's Memorial than to any other single hospital in the region.

Many of the outpatient consultations are often second and third opinions for children with the most complicated neurological disorders in the greater Chicago metropolitan area. The division's sub-specialists include experts in epilepsy, neuromuscular disorders, neuro-oncology, neurogenetics, behavioral neurology including attention-deficit disorder, Tourette syndrome and neurovirology.

Children's Memorial Epilepsy Center, under the direction of Douglas R. Nordli, Jr., MD, is internationally known for its clinical work and research. Staff members have special expertise in less invasive epilepsy surgery, ketogenic diet, clinical drug trials, febrile status epilepticus and complex forms of refractory epilepsy.

The center uses a comprehensive, child-centered approach to the treatment of seizure disorders. With a multidisciplinary team, child-friendly facility, and state-of-the-art technology, the program provides the comprehensive care necessary to ensure optimal outcomes.

Furthermore, almost every known illness affects the brain and nervous system, which is why one in three children hospitalized at Children's Memorial Hospital are seen by a neurologist at some time.

In order to provide the best care possible, the physicians work as a team with nurses and nurse practitioners with expertise in neurological disorders. These nurses include Robin Celano, ND, APN, NP, and Leslie Sondeen-Opila, APN, NP.
