Frequently asked questions

What can we (parents) expect at the initial evaluation?

An initial evaluation usually requires at least an hour. Expect to be asked very detailed questions regarding your child's illness. Please be prepared to give a very detailed history of your child's illness. This includes any symptoms you have noticed, when the problem first began, how frequently the problem occurs, what types of food your child eats (especially for complaints of headache), etc. Detailed questions will also be asked about family history that may be relative to your child's problem. Family history includes father, mother, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. You will be asked about the child's social history (school or day care problems, behavior problems, etc.), as well as developmental history (at what age your child walked, spoke first words, etc), and about the pregnancy itself (were there any complications, how long was labor, how child was delivered, how much your child weighed, any problems immediately following birth, any hospitalizations, etc.). Your child will then be given a thorough physical and neurological examination. If necessary, additional tests may be ordered to help the neurologist better determine the nature of your child's problem, and to make recommendations for the course of treatment for your child's illness. Also if necessary, follow-up care and/or referrals to other Children's Memorial specialists will be scheduled.
