Gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition (digestive disorders)

Gastrointestinal motility and functional bowel disorders program

Does your child suffer from abdominal pain, vomiting, constipation, or nausea? These are among the most common causes of consultation for the gastrointestinal motility and functional bowel disorders program. Most of these symptoms are related to conditions that are considered "functional" and without structural, inflammatory, infectious or metabolic causes. Management of these children may be challenging and tests may be normal even in severe cases. Other times, children symptoms may result from complex gastrointestinal motility problems that need to be investigated.

The staff of the gastrointestinal motility and functional bowel disorders program manage challenging cases within the biopsychosocial model approach. This model is based on the concept that the child’s symptoms may not result from a single cause but from many different factors that interact with each other. We believe that testing and treatment should be individualized for each child’s needs and respectful of family values. Our model of care includes discussing testing strategies, results and treatment with families and children. Children from the Chicago area, many cities in Illinois and other states frequently come to our program for diagnosis, second opinions and care.

The members of the program are:
