Inflammatory and infectious bowel disorders
There are many types of inflammations and infectious
disorders affecting the digestive system that require clinical care by a physician
or other healthcare professional. Several of the conditions discussed in
these pages are often treated medically. Some conditions are typically treated by a pediatric
surgeon (a general surgeon with specialized training in pediatrics).
Appendicitis
Appendicitis is an irritation, inflammation, and infection of the appendix (a
narrow, hollow tube that branches off the large intestine). The appendix
functions as a part of the immune system during the first few years of life.
After this time period, the appendix stops functioning and other organs continue
helping fight infection. Appendicitis is the most common cause of emergency
surgery in childhood.
Stomach and duodenal ulcers (peptic ulcers)
An ulcer is an open sore, or lesion, usually found on the skin or mucous
membrane areas of the body. An ulcer in the lining of the stomach or duodenum,
where hydrochloric acid and pepsin are present, is referred to as a peptic
ulcer.
When the peptic ulcer is located in the stomach, it is
called a gastric ulcer. When the peptic ulcer is located in the duodenum, it is
called a duodenal ulcer. The main cause of these ulcers was identified in 1983
as infection with a bacterium known as Helicobacter pylori. More
