Fetal orthopaedic surgery

Staff members in the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery treat children with a wide range of disorders of the musculoskeletal system. The most common orthopaedic conditions that are diagnosed prenatally through ultrasound are clubfoot, skeletal dysplasia, spina bifida, and fetal limb anomalies. In collaboration with colleagues in neurosurgery, urology, plastic surgery, and nursing, the team provides a comprehensive approach to care and follow-up for its patients. See 'Amniotic band birth defects' for a discussion of congenital limb amputation anomalies.

Although treatment does not begin until after birth, the doctors and nurses at Children's Memorial can provide parents with valuable information to help prepare them for their baby's arrival. Parents receive detailed counseling on the condition suspected and discussion of all aspects of possible treatment plans and options for care after birth.
