Program for high-fidelity patient simulation
The KidSTAR (Simulation for Teaching and Research) program was founded in 2005 within the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. The program's goal is to develop an active medical simulation program at Children's Memorial Hospital targeting a variety of learners. We view medical simulation as a valuable tool for education, particularly for critical incidents — rare, high-acuity events.
KidSTAR is based in a 850 square foot dedicated simulation center in the main hospital building, making Children's Memorial one of a handful of pediatric hospitals nationwide with this type of advanced training resource on-site. In addition, KidSTAR supports in-situ simulation in the Emergency Department and other clinical areas.
KidSTAR is an active participant in the Northwestern McGaw Simulation Network to coordinate simulation efforts across the Northwestern graduate medical education system.
The staff of the KidSTAR program is actively involved in a number of current research studies:
- Evaluation of an EMR-based patient handoff tool to improve ED physician-to-physician communication
- Assessment of an intervention to improve pediatric resident basic life support skills
- Development of a team leadership curriculum for critical care fellows
In addition to research activities, KidSTAR staff provide education targeting pediatric, family practice and emergency medicine residents, nurses, pediatric emergency and critical care fellows, and faculty.
