Glossary of terms

acne

a disorder of the hair follicles and sebaceous glands. Acne is characterized by black heads, pimple outbreaks, cysts, infected abscesses, and (sometimes) scarring.

acne neonatorum (also called baby acne)

the presence of pimples on newborn skin; common in the first month of life

cavernous hemangioma

a raised, red or purple mark in the skin, made up of enlarged blood vessels.

contact dermatitis

a rash or an inflammation of the skin caused by contact with various substances.

eczema (also called atopic dermatitis)

an inflammation of the skin that often causes itching and sometimes crusting, scaling, or blisters; usually occurs on the face, elbows, knees, and arms

moles

a term used to describe small skin marks caused by pigment-producing cells in the skin.

molluscum contagiosum

smooth, pearly, flesh-colored skin growths that may grow as large as a pencil eraser. Usually, they are found on the face and body, but may grow in the mouth or on the eyelid

ringworm

a fungal skin infection characterized by ring-shaped, red, scaly, or blistery patches.

scabies

an infestation of mites in the skin characterized by small pimples that itch.
