The physicians in the Department of Anesthesiology at Children's Memorial
Hospital administer more than 12,000 anesthetics yearly for all types of surgery
at the main downtown campus in Chicago and at the outpatient centers in Glenview
and Westchester.
All attending physicians are board-certified in anesthesia and have
additional sub-specialty training in pediatric anesthesia.
In addition to its services in surgery, the
department also provides anesthesia services in the Department of Medical
Imaging and in the cardiac catheterization laboratory. The staff also administers an acute
and chronic pain treatment service, oversees the sedation of children for
diagnostic procedures in many areas of the hospital and consults in
the intensive care units.
Children's Memorial is one of the national leaders in
research into drugs, equipment and techniques to increase the safety of
administering anesthesia to children.

A program for
anesthesia residents, fellows and allied health personnel is also part of the department's
mission, as is serving on national and international committees,
contributing to and editing anesthesia textbooks, and doing research.
