LECTURES AND CONFERENCES December 10, 2009 Pediatric Pearls Fall

This course is the 17th in a series of timely, one-day symposia for
healthcare providers interested in learning about the latest pediatric
treatments. The structure of this program remains the same with brief, practical
hints related to several topics as well as subspecialty issues confronting you
in your practice. For this installment, we present lectures on influenza,
chronic diarrhea and malabsorption, new drugs of abuse and neurofibromatosis 1
in childhood.
At the end of this conference, participants will be able to:
- Discuss the epidemiology of H1N1 and the seasonal flu.
- List the three most common etiologies for chronic diarrhea.
- Describe clinical presentations for drugs of abuse and list two new drugs
of abuse.
- List the clinical criteria for a diagnosis of NF1 and recognize the
important issues for the primary care of patients with NF1.

Pediatricians and other healthcare providers often encounter questions
regarding autism spectrum disorders. This year’s conference is a sequel to last
year’s presentation. A panel of experts will discuss topics such as screening,
diagnosis, medical workup, associated medical, developmental and behavioral
conditions, treatment, advocacy and adolescent issues. The goal of this one-day
conference is to update professionals on the latest findings, approaches and
techniques in the care of children and adolescents with autism spectrum
disorders.
At the end of this conference, participants will be able to:
- Identify children with autism spectrum disorders in their practice.
- Discuss common dilemmas in diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders.
- Address common medical issues of children, including adolescents with
autism spectrum disorders.
- Recommend effective medical, developmental, behavioral and educational
interventions for children on the autism spectrum and identify appropriate
community-based resources.

healthcare providers will provide practical tips related to a variety of
heart-related issues such as syncope, ECG, fetal cardiology, chest pains,
cardiac surgery and care posttransplant. Throughout the day, our speakers will
address some of the more common dilemmas associated with these issues, share
first-hand experiences and offer guidelines on how to improve patient care.

quality standards and measurement and anxiety in children and adolescents.

This one-day conference should be attended by any healthcare provider
interested in learning more about the latest in vaccines, rotavirus, flu, strep
throat, recurrent infections and MRSA. A panel of distinguished experts will
give practical advice related to these areas as well as indicators that might
require follow-up with a specialist.
At the end of this conference, participants will be able to:
- Identify when to screen children for immuno-deficiencies and tuberculosis.
- Describe antimicrobial therapy when indicated for the flu and infections
commonly seen in the office.
- Discuss the latest vaccine recommendations.
- Identify the basic travel needs and recognize when a referral to a travel
clinic might be necessary.

This one-day symposium for healthcare providers will address various
conditions and injuries that can occur in the young athlete. Sports-related
activities among children and adolescents continue to rise and the primary care
practitioner is often the first to diagnose certain ailments and conditions.
Throughout the day, our experts will address some of the more common conditions
and dangers that athletes may face and offer guidelines on how to improve
patient care and a positive outcome.
At the end of this conference, participants will be able to:
- Determine when athletes can return to play after a sport-related
concussion.
- Recommend appropriate nutrition and hydration for young athletes.
- Assess sports injuries in the primary care office setting.
- Complete a joint exam and make the proper
assessment.

ROUNDS Grand Rounds
All Grand Rounds are held in Bigler Auditorium at Children's Memorial Hospital. Surgical grand rounds begin at 7:30 a.m. and medical grand rounds at 8 a.m., unless otherwise noted.
Warren Wright Adolescent Center Lectures
Lectures are held on Friday afternoons from NOON to 1:30PM. We will not be serving lunch for the lectures held at NMH, however you are very welcome to bring your own lunch. A buffet luncheon is served from 11:30 a.m. to Noon for lectures being held at Children's Memorial. The Brain Tumor Board meets every Thursday from 3 – 5 p.m. Tumor Board
